I hate pennies so much right now, because I've been doing this with them for the last three days:

Kinja'd!!!

That is my upstairs bathroom. The room has been a disaster since I bought the house 2.5 years ago. It finally got to the point where it wasn't even usable, so I'm ripping the whole thing apart and redoing it.

Kinja'd!!!

I have a bit of an obsession with copper. I have to resist the urge to buy anything made of copper, or that is copper plated. So I looked into some sort of copper-colored tile, only to discover actually pennies are a cheaper option(~$2.95/sq ft at this packing density).

So I !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Then I bought !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and started gluing.

Kinja'd!!!

With a bit of luck, I will be done with the last corner tonight, and can start sealing them with high-build polyurethane tomorrow.

In addition to the floor, new wainscotting is going in, as well as !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . I've also !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and given them a coating of high-gloss clear. The clawfoot tub will be getting restored & upgraded with a shower, and the toilet & sink will be redone with all new guts as well.

Hopefully by the time I'm done this project it will have finally gotten warm enough I can go out and work on car stuff again.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, none are visible in the photos, but there are several easter eggs being hidden in the floor, including an entire row of wheat pennies, a british penny(which required trimming the pennies around it to make it fit), two bahamas pennies with the pigs facing up, and (if I can find all the right years), 36 years of pennies in chronological order(for my age).

Feel more confident stepping out of the shower with our pennies enhancement.

I'm amazed at the border of new shiny pennies.

THAT'S dedication.

the real question...

are the pennies cheaper than tiles of equivalent size? They might actually be.

[EDIT: I now see that you mentioned in the post... the pennies ARE cheaper!]

And I do hope you coat them with poly, and keep electrical sources away... imagine the conductivity of a copper floor, soaked in water... if a live wire were to come anywhere near enough to arc to it.

That is amazing, I love it! Also, you have way more patience than me. I tried laying tile once and it was a terrible experience. But now I kind of want to try again, I think this could make an awesome decorative strip in a regular tile install, too.

That's pretty damn awesome. Will the poly/varnish prevent the pennies from tarnishing further?

They'll get a nice thick coating of poly, if not the whole floor would probably turn green in a few months with the moisture in a bathroom.

I hadn't even thought about electricity, fortunately though the power for the 2nd floor is all dropped down from the attic, so there are no lines even inside the walls/floor near here.

You're a better man than I. I remodeled houses for 35 years but my patience level for this kind of thing is very low. Y'know I think I'm pissed off knowing you're doing it. :)

A thick coat of polyurethane should also be a decent insulator, I would think...

Very nice idea. We're planning renovations, including a second bathroom, and I've sent this to my wife. It will make the other ideas I propose seem more normal.

I hope so. The useful information about doing this online is a bit spotty.

I am the least patient home remodeler too. I'm trying to remodel this whole bathroom to at least a usable state in about two weeks. I've been banging through the pennies install as fast as I can, I spent 2 shifts of 4 hours each working on it on sunday.

I have one suggestion: 12x12 tile. :) It looks great though.

One other thing. A lot of people don't remember what tile setters used to go throught to install the intricate patterns in some of what are now considered historic homes. Notch the joists 6" deep in the entire bathroom. Pan the area with 3/4" plywood and fill with concrete within about 1" of the top. then add the mortar they would set the tile in. I was always amazed at the skill level needed to do what they did and get the floor in dead level and even at the top. I tore out some pours that were deeper than that.

So you 'penny pinched' a penny?

a british penny(which required trimming the pennies around it to make it fit)

I find the history of coins very interesting. Maybe it's my age.
